raiting (-3/5) Western countries criticised over Rwandan genocide. Rwanda is marking the 10th anniversary of the start of the genocide, when about 800,000 people were killed. General Romeo Dallaire led the UN peacekeeping force at the time. This week, he's angrily criticized certain Western countries for failing to stop the massacres. On his return to Rwanda, General Romeo Dallaire singled out the United States, Britain and France as the countries who had the capacity to act in 1994. But they chose not to, he said, because Rwanda had no strategic value, and therefore the international community didn't give one damn for Rwandans, he said. After the massacres started on the sixth of April 1994, UN peacekeepers led by General Dallaire, lacked the mandate and the capacity to stop them. He was traumatised by the experience and later attempted suicide. Speaking at a conference to mark the tenth anniversary of the genocide, General Dallaire was visibly angry as he described how his requests for the rapid deployment of more troops were ignored. But he strongly objected to suggestions from one speaker that he himself could have disobeyed orders and thus saved more lives. * singled out - выделил; * Rwanda had no strategic value - зд.
