The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) dropped the Russian-American
Observation Satellite (RAMOS) system in its Fiscal Year 05 budget
request, in which the MDA said that work on the two RAMOS satellites
would cost an additional $550 million, on top of the $120 million
already spent. Instead, MDA will support as yet unnamed other missile
defense cooperation projects with Russia. The RAMOS system has been
heavily politicized with support lagging on both sides, but it could
have filled in some holes in Russia’s early warning network.
