Here's a fragment of russian traditionai gingerbread, known as "Tul'skiy pr'yanik". But print is not good to read. But the pryanik is very old, I shure. If it is very impotrant to you, I can show your picture to a specialist of Musuem of Tulsky pryanik, it would not be hard, cause I live in Tula. Turn around the picture It'll be more correct. First line of print is "Âú Òóëú" (old russian caracters "ú" shows us that the pryanik was made berfore 1918). This pint means: [Made]"in Tula" (rus - v Tul'e). Unfortunalery, next (second) line is absotulely unreadible.

Hello Walker,
Thank you very much for your quick responce, and translation. I did not know it was upside down, they marked it on top of the key-hole. I thought this was a large tea box for samovar? (tula steel) Here is a picture of the item.
I will try to clean the letters later on.

By the way, Walker. What is this staff? Does not look like samovar at all. For tea box it seems to be too big.

HA-HA!!! I mistook! Your fragment really looks like a trdational Tulskiy pryanik. Look: The unit is a box for sugar or candy. Next line means "Ô.Ý. Øêóíàåâú" (F.E. Shkuna'ev) - the name of manufacturer (F[yodor-?] E[duardovich-?] Shkunaev). First time character "Ô" was using in name "Ô¸äîðú" in the end of 19-th century, early russian used greek letter "Fita", my keyboard has not this symbol. For more: http://www.samovar.holm.ru or http://www.russamovar.ru/indexmain-e.html Any questions? Searchin' for your roots?

This is a domestic violence item, very convinient to have at home. Whoever gets a hold of it first is going to win. You can use it as a defense item too.

I asked the person of the samovar collection he said this:
The brand as I can read is: "ÂÚ ÒÓËÚ Ô. - ØËÓÍßÅÂÚ" - that in English : " In Tula F.(as Factory) - SHLUNIAEV (as master or owner of that factory)".

There's no russain family as "ØËÓÍßÅÂ", I checked it it the phone book of Tula. There are 4 ØÊÓÍAÅÂ's... Here the are: ØÊÓÍÀÅÂÀ À.Å. - +7 (0872)346098 Òóëà, óë. Ïóçàêîâà, 5, 29 ØÊÓÍÀÅÂÀ À.Ì. - +7 (0872)352320 Òóëà, ïåð. Øåâ÷åíêî, 13, 6. ØÊÓÍÀÅÂÀ À.Ä. - +7 (0872)353818 Òóëà, óë. Àê. Ïàâëîâà, 1Á, 59 ØÊÓÍÀÅÂÀ Â.È. - +7 (0872)358848 Òóëà, óë. Àê. Ïàâëîâà, 2À, 2. Also, second letter of name does not look like "Ë" [L], and fifth one is not "ß" [YA] or [IA]. Trust me.
Better I'll show your picture to specialist, OK?

To Tula: I called to Museum of samovar about your sugar box. They said, that Shkunaev was a manufacturer of accessories for tea drinking in the end of 19-th and beginning of 20-th centuries. The basic material of his products - copper and a brass. He had a small manufacture in Tula in the Lock street. His products are not raritets, typical for Russian household items and not valuable, made for simple people. His successors live in Tula. You can phone them. Good luck!
