I am watching CSPAN right now, there's a meeting between Red Cross, FBI and journalists discussing fraud. Red Cross and FBI claim that they identified more than 4000 websites that "falsly claim that they collect donations for the Hurricane Katrina relief".
What this sounds to me is like the biggest fraud of all times. Apparently, Red Cross is willing to spend MY TAXPAYER's MONEY and time on harrasing other organizations that collect money. There's, apparently, too much money involved, and they want it.
DON'T SEND YOUR MONEY TO RED CROSS.
Just my humbling opinion

Red Cross is charitable organization and does not depend on your tax money but on donations from ordinary people and organizations. The majority of charitable organizations are some sort of scam however. The Red Cross is one of them perhaps. Nevertheless I would not go so far and call them swindlers since I don't know any history of it. United Nation is a different story but it has nothing to do with Katrina disaster.

FBI was there, some FEMA folks, etc. - that's taxpayer's money. Red Cross seemed to be the initiator.
I've also been to Red Cross headquaters in Switzerland, and I tell you what a palace that is! But I bet they do some good also

Do you suggest donating to those 4000 fraudulent organizations?

Here's one - there's this site where you can open your home for Katrina victims. Give a spare bedroom to someone homeless. http://www.openyourhome.com/
The funny thing, I spoke to someone who said they have 300,000 homes offered, but very few are filled because they are well behind on matching process.
These feds and large bureaucratic "help" organizations, they are behind on everything.
Buy gas or something, donate to gas companies.
