The US Government has already once completed an Energy Independence Scam on U.S. consumers. We are entering round 2.
In 1974, A U.S. Government created tax incentive programs for "energy independence". A lot of investment vehicles and companies were created to shelter oil and gas profits into these companies and security vehicles. Overall, close to $1 trillion dollars in assets were sold to american investment community in exchange for tax deductions. Slowly after that, a U.S. Government initiated a tax attack on these companies and vehicles, ultimately destroying the very idea of energy independence.
The price of oil that was put into these assumptions - i.e. the tipping point for energy independence - was $14-$18 barrel of oil.
I guess we all know what happened then with energy independence? Right, absolutely nothing. The price of a barrel of oil is now $130/barrel.
