Is it possible they bought the rights to all 3 movies???

I'm not American nor Russian, so I will give my view about this film. The public who divided themselves afford or against the film saying the film is too American, should re-think more about this before making an easy criticism. First of all, the initial scenes of the movie although reminded me Lord of The Rings do have a special thing. Lord of the Rings, in fact was made by a director from New Zeland with the special effects done there as well, so even if the influence came from that film, this wouldn't be "American" film. I particularly enjoyed the HELMETS with wings, it reminded me something from Kaiser helmet during World War II or the film The Vikings acted and produced and directed by Kirk Douglas (who is a Russian Jew actor whose name is Issur Danielovitch Demsky). The scene of Night Watcher had a Gothic seal that could be taken from Sweden with a Bergman film like "The 7 Seal" filmed in black and white. The director used several influences like Jason Lee in The Crow or Matrix, Stigmata, The Fly, Blade, Twister, Highlander and perhaps Star Wars Empire Strikes Back not just because the use of a neon light tube as Skywalker laser beam sword but the idea of a son versus the father which was not in the original book. Now, if you think Matrix is American film you're wrong. The influence of the Wacholwsky brothers (Jewish)was mainly -like Tarantino- from martial arts and animations from Japan and China! Even the famous American "westerns" like The Magnificent Seven was imported from Japanese Kurosawa's 7 Samurais not to mention the BLOODY SCENES as seen from closer angle were not originally created by the Americans but the so-called Spaguetti Italian Western (Sergio Leone really created Clint Eastwood persona). Americans just imitated. Even the acting taught in Elia Kazan or Lee Strasberg methods with actors like Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino could be Chekov or other Russians who invented it first! If 99% of the critics and journalists didn't like the film because they didn't know how to classify it as terror, science fiction, American or Russian, drama or whatever is THEIR PROBLEM, not the public or people who know something about movies. After that film Russians are watching 35% of films produced in Russia while before that was merely 5%. I really liked the film and I couldn't identify it as American, it has a particular and special taste which is very Russian, let's say the drops of blood in the Russian typical lemonade, the yellow and SLOW bus with electricity technicians with a rocket propulsion, the Olga Owl transformation in a very subtle way leaving things to imagination or the quick transformation of a woman-tiger. The old witch that probably you can find people like them easily in newspapers, the Olga the Owl chanting of a song which belongs to II World War suggesting she just woke up from that time and doesn't know modern songs, the wonderful and muscular "mamacita linda" Rock Star performer, the colors of this nostalgic and old Moscow and even the blackout that probably reminded you that summer's blackout in Moscow. Before that you only had cartoon vampires. It certainly is a good epic film that means Russia is evolving in cinematic adventure and even France is doing that with modern films instead of the usual French and terrible long discussions at the bed or the table trying to teach us Sartre's existencialism instead of just having fun with intelligent films.

Americans are very proud of the film which they think is the number 1 of the list "Citizen Kane". In spite of optical effects and creations or "flasback" the story wasn't universal, so although I appreciated it, I didn't like it a smuch as... let's say POTEMKIN BATTLESHIP. Do you remember that scene at Odessa stairway? Until now I just can't forget the scene when thousands of extra were about to step on the baby-car scene or almost killing someone with NO LEGS who manages to escape at the last minute, just jumping somehow. That scene was imitated by famous Brian Di Palma in 'The Untochables' with Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro. He even included SAILORS to remind us the very source. Francis Coppola (he's Italian like Sergio Leone who invented the Spaguetti Western and "Once Upon a Time in America" used a scene in Godfather in which a bullet hits the eye of a gangster through his glasses. Well, well, that American scene was copied from Potemkin Battleship. The scene watchinf raw meat covered with worms was incredible realistic for a black and white and no sound film or the air in the sails of some ships. So, before critizing a Russian film that looks "American" we should understand America had too many influences even from Russia, Germany, Japan, China, England, Sweden, New Zeland, Italy to call it properly "American".

Timur, the director of the film, was doing comercial for tv like the propaganda of a bank, for example. That's very interesting because he has a talent or sensibility. Look at English director Riddle Scott. It doesn't matter if he did the film in Hollywood or not. What is relevant is he was also doing comercials for tv (like the Hindu director, I think he is...the one who did "The Cell" a trip to the mind of schizophrenic assassin) and he was educated in art and he produced some of the best films ever. Of course, the Americans will say the best film of fiction was Bladerunner with Harrison Ford (made by him) and completely ignore the influence of a GERMAN film like "Metropolis" with one of the best robots ever (George Lucas apparently imitated to made his version of the android in Star Wars). They spent 7 million MARCS at that time (1921) and used 37.000 extras during 16 months shooting! Scott did also Black Rain with Michael Douglas in Japan (it's interesting the use of Neon Japanese light with its katakanas ideogram language in Bladerunner and in Black Rain). He used a European artist to be the inspiration not only for his model of ALIEN but also the decoration of the film, recently he did The Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator. So, what people usually believe is "American" does have several influences because Hollywood adapted directors from all over the world including Canada and Russians like in Jon Voight and Erik Roberts in The Runnaway Train or the tv series of Odyseey about Ulises epic story. Even in "Troy" the director is the same German guy who is making the new version of Poseidon Adventure and who also did The Boat. Blockbusters like "Independence Day" and the original "Stargate" were also made by another German director and each one of them has a unique particular vision which is not American.

In Night Watch I also liked the scene of the Russian doll that trasforms into spider. It was not an imitation of the American film with Tom Cruise (Minority Report) in the scene with bugs chasing him. We know this because when the Russian director was a kid he had his Russian doll-spider called "mashenka". As you can see I'm ready and willing to see "Day Watch" and, as a matter of fact, I already bought Night Watch DVD one of the very few Russian films available in South America.
I also liked the film "Siberia" but that was a co-production with England and other countries as well including Russia.
