Here's a question for the great Russian linguists of this forum. What are the exact rules as to when to use есть and when to leave it out. Examples:
1. У меня есть машина. - positive 2. У меня нет машиней (unsure of ending for машина) - negative 3. У его три дети - positive, but dealing with humans 4. y его нет детей - negative 5. У них есть врема (use eсть here or not?) - positive 5. У них нет времени (ending?) - negative 6. У них только нимнога времени - limited...?
These are the observations I have made. Can anyone tell me some specific rules to follow when considering the usage of this word. As far as I can tell, you never use it in a negative construction, but there are times you also don't use it for a positive formation.
Thanks!

Let's see: verb есть is used in that case when you are free to have or not to have thing, for example У меня есть машина You can have a car or you can have no car. Or У нее есть дети - she might have children or she might have no children, it's up to her. In sentences like У меня зеленые глаза you always MUST have eyes so u don't use verb есть. In sentence like У нее трое детей verb есть is not used cos there is definition ТРОЕ детей. So we have already fact she has children and its additional info about THREE. У нее зеленая машина verb есть isnot used cos there is defenition зеленая. Hope u understand my poor english. In case u have any other questions about russian language u can contact me passiokateb@yandex.ru I have degree in teaching Russian to foreigners
