I'm currently engageded in developping a Science Fiction setting for a Role-Playing Game... and I've been assigned to develope a star system that's supposed to be a 28th century Russian colony.

Among other details, one of the features of that system will be that each citizen will have his/her personal datapad that will serve as a small library... and I'm gonna need a proper Russian name for that thingy... My Russian isn't good enough for me to find a proper name for it...

So? Any ideas, anyone?

Btw. if any of you have original ideas on how to make that star system unique and with Russian look&feel - your suggestions are welcome! Very happy

Hi. I'm from Russia. I like your ideas about the game.
Therefore I'd like to purpose some names for your Russian colonist.
1)Svyatoslav.Slavonic transcription - [Святослав].
It means "Gloria of Saint". Svyatoslav [Sviatosla'v] was the Russian prince in 13-th century. He was a good fighter. He was killed in battle close Kalka-river in 1239. Mongols wanted to conquer the Europe, but at first the must be able to come trough Russia. Svyatoslav and his army are died, but then mongols have no more power to go with war against the Europeans. His death saves the European civilization.
2)Next name Yaroslav [Iarosra'v]- slav. translit. - Ярослав. Тhe name means "Gloria of Fury". He was Russian King in 10-th century. He gave a first law to Russians. His code called "The russian truth" is the first european mid-age written law-code. It is establish european law system which develop itself till modern times, and now every person can say: We are the civilized people, thanks to Yaroslav. For his code people called him "Yaroslav the Wise". He allways shown with his law-code in hands. There are the town founded in the name of Yaroslav. Now the town became city - Yaroslavl. The city is the one of the centers of Russian space industy. The most of compononents in suborbital space station "Mir" were made in Yaroslavl.
Additionally, there are good breweries in the city.

Svyatoslav and Yaroslav will always live in every russian heart.

At war against Hitler there were formed guard tanks divisions in the name of the russian heroes. One of tank platoon of Svyatoslav's division first came in sub-Berlin, it was on 04/21/1945.
I think it's enough.

3)More originally slavonic names, as for example in your collection:
Miroslav - Gloria of peace - Мирослав
Radomir - Happy in peace - Радомир
Borislav - Gloria of fight - Борислав
Borimir - Fighter for peace - Боримир
Svyatogor - Saint mountain - Святогор.
All abovediscribed names are unique, and you can not see these in other nations.

In mean time most of Russins have geece, jewish of western origin' names. As for example: Alexandr (in russian language it hasn't "e" before "r" in the end), Vasili (Basil, Bazilius), Georgi [similar names: Yuri and Egor] (George), Ivan (John), Evgeni (Eugen), Serguei (Serge) etc.
I hope it helps.
Now I'll look for some images of Svyatoslav and Yaroslav.

Sherif: Sorry about the double post and double thread... Very happy

Walker:
I'm a Serb and I've lived in Moscow during the bombing, you don't have to translate anything... Wink
1) Hmm... much the same as our Kosovo battle... in fact - almost exactly the same...
2) I'll keep that in mind... He deserved at least an University named after him...
3) No? I know lots of Miroslavs, Radomirs and Borislavs right here in Belgrade...

Thanks for the picture...
Since you've been so helpful, I have several things I'm curious about... For the purpose of this RPG setting I thought it'd be more than lousy to just turn Yenkan (the name of that 28th Russian colony) into yet another shallow Soviet stereotype... especially since I've seen Russia with my own eyes and that's the least grattitude I can give to the country that was my refuge when my life was threatened in 1999... So I need to know more about specific Russian inovations in the fields of:
- art... all types of art... from folklore to architecture
- I'm curious about Cossaks... I thought to give them an interesting role in the space-colony as border guardsmen against thr Hunn guerillas... but my image of Cossaks is very shallow and undevelopped... If you could give me some good insight on their mentality - it'd be a great help...
- Do you have any idea on how the Russians would call their own personal datapads that's supposed to storage books? (since I'm well aware that books are relatively cheap in Russia... and read quite a lot, a thing I admire)

vitalyo: You sure you haven't posted in a wrong thread? Confused (yes, I can read and understand Russian, I'm just too lazy to write it Very happy )

I did not know That you are Serb.
Welcome our Slavinic Brother!
I thought you're an American.
Most of history aspects of our coutries are the same. Therefore Serb and Russian are brothers. Of course threr are a lot Radomirs and Radovans (I do not mean Karadjic) in СРПСКА. I always thin' why Russians lost their native names. We were not occupated by Greece or Israel etc. Serbia and any Balkan countreis were occupated almost 500 yaers, but they were saved their names. This is the real question and answer I couldn't find.
As for me I think that universe develop itself as a spin. Why 28 century will be far from 14-th one?
I promise to think 'bout some Slavonic names.
But I'll by useless to help in any sides of your game.
I am drugdealer. I am not an artist.

About Cossaks.
Cossaks was an independant nation within Russian Impery. They have special native note in the passports as Cossks (Not Russsian, not Ukrainian). They have their own spoken language (no written). As the people say Cossaks have Khasrs&Skifs root, and their language was similar. Now the Language is lost at all. Their nation was intergated into Russian from 15 to 17 centuries. But they were privileged nation in the Impery. The have not been obliged to pay taxes at all!(Wow!) They have a free land from Zar. But they've been obliged to go war from first call against any enemy in any point of world. Therfore they must be keep amunition direct in their houses. Cossak's horses were the best in Russian Chavalerie. Cossak fighters were the best in Russian army. No fear, no mercy. Enemies hate's Cossak's courage. Before the Russin Revilution in 1917 Cossaks were united in 3 Greath Brotherhoods known as "Kazachestvo" (Казачество) there were Don's Cossaks, Kuban's Cossaks and Siberian Cossaaks (there were a much little Kazachestva in Ural, Terek, etc.) But most famous are Don's and Kuban's. Don is the river in the Ukraine, Kuban is the river in the North Caukasus. After the 1917 Revolution most Cossaks fight for White Army (Zar's side) against Red Army (Lenin's side). As far as you known Red Army won. Most of Cossaks left our country and came generally in Canada, Australia, the USA, South American Countries. There are little Live traditional Cossaks villages in Uruguay and Paraguai. They have Zars orders and native clothes as well as museums exponates or movie persones.
***
New Russian order decided to eliminate Cossaks as independed nation at all. Cossaks were assembled with Russians (Kuban's Cossaks and all others) and Ukrainians (Don's). They have not passports therefore they have had rights. All threir privilegies were cancelled. When they recieved their first passport (it was in 50-s) they became Russians or Ukrainians. Thats the way one of gretests nation of Russian Impery was destroyed.
It is very sad story.
Now Cossaks taken the attemps to re-build their native traditions, and oreders, but it is not enough.

Russians lost some of their native names? Like what?
And, honestly, you're confusing me a bit... we were never occupied by Isreal...(?)
Serbia and any Balkan countreis were occupated almost 500 yaers, but they were saved their names. This is the real question and answer I couldn't find.
The fact that the occupying Ottoman culture was so much alien helped us in preserving our culture...
But much is lost... The "Muslim" nation are those who decided to accept the Islamic culture...
But it was at high cost...
We were numerous as English in medieval times... now they number how much... 60-70 million? And there are 8 million of us now, tops...
In 1900 we were as numerous as Romanians that now number 35 million... How did it come to this?
Onslaught... Ethnic cleansing and endless invasions... Not to mention the centrifugal forces created by injecting ideologies... The price is heavy. Very heavy.
Why 28 century will be far from 14-th one?

But I'll by useless to help in any sides of your game.
I am drugdealer. I am not an artist.
So what? I'm a 3D Animation director, and a student of electric engineering... That doesn't have anything to do with this...
And - I need your oppinion, not data... I can find data on my own on various sites... I need the oppinion of someone living in Russia. It's worth 100 times more than data...
But they were privileged nation in the Impery. The have not been obliged to pay taxes at all!(Wow!) They have a free land from Zar. But they've been obliged to go war from first call against any enemy in any point of world.
Heh... sounds exactly like the way we have lived in Austria... we were privileged, but under obligation to fight their wars and defend their country... while on the other side the Jannisaries were nothing more than kidnapped Serbian kids brainwashed in Turkish military schools and turned into fanatic killing machines... Serbs fighting on both sides but Austrians and Turks ruling the land...
Therfore they must be keep amunition direct in their houses. Cossak's horses were the best in Russian Chavalerie.
What were Cossak's horses like?
Large? Enduring?
Fast?
Agile?

Can you tell me about their fighting style?
I heard that Cossak's are probably the best sword-fighters of today... and that they even win international tournaments against Japanese...
Cossak fighters were the best in Russian army. No fear, no mercy. Enemies hate's Cossak's courage.
I discribed Cossaks as a cold-bloody killers, but it is far away form truth. You can know more about Cossaks traditions between '10-'20 of 20 century in "Quite Don" of M. Sholokhov (Book is Nobile nominee in '50-s).
There are fight, passinons, blood, love, live and death.
In USSR "Quite Don" was a main book in major classes of mid-schools. But, in any way, you can find more usefull info's in QD, and about real russians and coassak's names as well.
Concerning tornament Cossak vs Japanees there is a courious story. One of Cossak's warriors came on the mortal-combat tournament in Japan. After the fight he is wipin' his bloody sabre and tellin': Japaneese are courious people commin agains my sabre with a naked feet! In one hand it is so silly, but in other hand it is so fanny!
About horses. Cossak's horses was not big. Durable, very durable. Long distance durable. Durability of the horses was a legand. Horses can come far-far without fourage and water carrin' a lot of amunitions. Also fast in battle.

Ret. wr: And, honestly, you're confusing me a bit... we were never occupied by Isreal...(?)
- You didn't understand me. May be I've explained my minds incorrectly. I meand why we have jewish names? I can understand greece names (Alexander, Vasilii etc.) Greeks brings Ortodox religion in Russia. But there are not any reason to have jewish names. Ivan is mostly popular name in Russa (exactly they call us Ivans) but Ivan is jewish original name.

Ret. wr.:So - today there are as many Cossaks in North and South America as there are in Russia?
I didn't know that... interesting...
- Yes. But they are callin' Russians and Ukrainians. In WWW-2 there were 2 Cossak's divisions in Russian Army of Freedom of General Krasnov's. They fight on the German's side in Italy agans allied forces.
To be continued.
