Manchester NH
Manchester, as New Hampshire’s largest city, is considered by many to be the best little city on the east coast. With only a hundred thousand residents or so, the city has been around since 1809 when it was named for the great Manchester in England, the first industrialized city in the world, and a hopeful namesake for the future industry of Manchester, New Hampshire. Manchester soon afterward became a roaring successful manufacturing town led by the development of Amoskeag Manufacturing Company and its multiple mills, making everything from cigars to sewing machines to rifles.
The city’s finest architecture is residue of the mill town’s industries in the 19th century. Scattered with dozens of pieces of historical architecture and American History, Manchester is a city devoted to its past, always striving to maintain that which made it in the first place. Up until about 20 years ago, the city still milled textile products, but of late has moved quickly to adapt to the changing times and is now one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in New England, a haven for new businesses and one of the best places to find a job in the state.
With a sharp influx of new residents and spikes in rental costs of the classic row housing used by mill workers for over a hundred years, the city has seen substantial growth, in part because of the local government’s eagerness to adapt and grow. With a beautiful countryside, and nearby landmarks dating back to the 18th century and the revolutionary war, Manchester is one of New England’s finest little cities.
