Albuquerque NM
The American Southwest is littered with classic historical landmarks and pit stops. Nestled down in between the Rio Grande River and the Sandia Mountains is Albuquerque, one of the truly great outlets of Southwestern and American Indian art and culture. Just an hour or so away from Santa Fe on the good old Route 66, Albuquerque is not to be missed on the drive through.
With one of the largest state fairs in the country and more than a dozen different festivals spread throughout the year, you’ll find recreations of classic Native American Powwows, Spanish villages from hundreds of years ago and the time of the Spanish trade routes between Santa Fe and Mexico City, and much more. Surrounded by the steppes of ages old Pueblo Indian ruins, you can time your stay to intersect with the historical festivals as well as sightseeing at any of the area’s numerous natural attractions.
It’s not all history in Albuquerque though, as the sprawling cityscape features many beautiful attractions, ranging from your typical zoo, to race tracks and casinos, to an enormous world class university. However, for those that like a little taste of good old fashioned American Southwest history, Albuquerque is a cultural hub like no other. Spending a few days in beautiful downtown with the cities many museums, shopping venues and historical touchstones before taking the trip to the artistic center of Santa Fe is a perfect way to absorb the natural beauties and cultures that inspired the artistic majesty of that other great city in New Mexico.
